McWhirter - Bridges Family

Chapter 1
Charles and Nancy (Griffin) McWhirter

of
Wilson County, Tennessee

Charles BRIDGES McWHIRTER, born 1803, son of ___?___ BRIDGES. Charles' guardian was Hugh B. McWHIRTER. Charles died after 1840 and before 1850, Wilson County, Tennessee.
Charles married Nancy GRIFFIN 10 Dec 1823, Lebanon, Wilson County, Tennessee. (Note: Charles was not yet 21 when he married. Hugh B. McWHIRTER was bondsman for him, allowing him to marry.) Nancy was the daughter of Abraham and Elizabeth Orrel (HAMPTON) GRIFFIN.
(Note: The above Bridges Coat of Arms is a known Bridges Coat of Arms, but at this time we do not know if this is the correct Coat of Arms for this Bridges family.)
Reconstructed 1810 census of Wilson County, Tennessee shows Hennery BRIDGES, Sam BRIDGES, Jeremiah McWHORTER and George McWHORTER.
They were members of the Spencer Lick Baptist Church in Wilson County. The church is now called Laguardo Baptist Church. He was on the membership rolls of 1811-1830.
In 1820, the census shows Charles McWHIRTER living in Wilson County, Tennessee. (Note: Along with Hugh B. McWHIRTER being listed on that census page, also were Hugh's brother, George B. McWHIRTER and also Dorell BRIDGES.)
In 1830, the census shows Charles McWHIRTER (age 20-29) living in Wilson County, Tennessee. In his household were 3 boys under the age of 5, 1 boy age 5-9; 1 girl under the age of 5; and 2 females 20-29.
In Jul 1836, Nancy placed a peace bond on Charles in Wilson County, Tennessee. She dismissed the peace bond on 9 Jul 1836.
In 1840, the census show Charles McWHIRTER (30-39) living in Wilson County, Tennessee. In his household were 2 boys under 5, 2 boys 5-9; 1 boy 10-14; 1 girl under 5; 2 girls 10-14 and 1 woman 30-39.
There are several twins in the McWHIRTER family.
DNA testing of the different males lines of Charles and Nancy's sons have proven that Charles was a BRIDGES and not a McWHIRTER. The Bridges' and McWhirter's lived in the same area. It appears that Charles was born a BRIDGES and raised by Hugh McWHIRTER, therefore taking his name. Possibly his mother was a McWHIRTER.
(Note: There was previously some question about John Houston McWHIRTER being another son of Charles and Nancy (GRIFFIN) McWHIRTER, but it is known that at least three of Samuel Hugh McWHIRTER's children, William, Effie and Charles, refered to John Houston McWHIRTER as their Uncle. Then later DNA proved them to be of the same family.)
