Lillie Belle McWhirter Williams

             Lillie Belle McWHIRTER, born 1868, Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois, daughter of Charles Pitts and Rebecca (HAMMER) McWHIRTER (See Chapter 7). She died 1949, Marion County, Illinois.
    Belle married Andrew J. "Andy" WILLIAMS 6 Feb 1887 by James M. Harvey, JP. Andy was born 1865 and died 1935.They are buried in Martin Cemetery, Foster Township.
    Aunt Belle and Uncle Andy had a big house in Tonti Township. It was located on the northeast corner of Oak Grove Road and Martin Road. My grandmother, Grace (BASSETT) CONANT (See Chapter 15) told me that when she was a little girl that she and her cousins use to slide down the banister of Aunt Belle's house. It evidently had a long staircase with a nice solid banister. I also would imagine that Aunt Belle didn't know they were doing that. The house has been torn down and there is a new home there and Gary and Pam (McWHIRTER) HAWKINS live there (See Chapter 11, 2-1-2).

    Roy married Rosa E. BORING 2 Feb 1910, Marion County, Illinois. He was 22 and she was 18 when they married. They later divorced. She was born 11 Mar 1893, daughter of Thomas Jefferson "Jeff" and Josie (EAGAN) BORING. Rosa died 9 May 1969. Burial in the Alma Cemetery, Alma, Marion County, Illinois. Rosa married 2nd Oscar T. SMITH.
    On 16 Apr 1910, the census shows Roy (22) and Rosa (18) WILLIAMS living in Tonti Township, Marion County, Illinois. They and their parents were said to have been born in Illinois. Roy was a farmer. They were renting their farm. They had been married for less than a year. She had given birth to no children.

    Loren married Lola Marie DONOHO.
    Loren was a veteran and served in the United States Military during the Korean War. He was a member of the Salem American Legion.
    Loren was Dietetic Supervisor of Scott Air Force Base Hospital Dining Hall for 35 years.
    They owned and ran the Starlite Restaurant in Salem on Hwy 50 West, near Texas Corner (Selmaville Road). They sold the restaurant and is now called 5 Brothers Restaurant in 2005. In 2008, the Starlite was torn down and a new restaurant was built just behind where the orginal was. It is named Five Brothers.
    At Loren's death, he had 17 grandchildren and two great grandsons.

    Emogene married Loren Omer ALBERT 25 Nov 1931. He was born 21 Oct 1912, Marion County, Illinois, son of Emmitt Elmer and Martha Jane "Jenny" (McWHIRTER) ALBERT Loren died 15 Feb 1991. They are buried in Martin Cemetery, Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois. (See Chapter 9,2-4)
    In 1977, Loren retired from Glenn Lumber Company in Salem when he was 65 years of age. He was lumber yard manager.

    On 23 Jul 1946, Joe enlisted into the United States Military.
    Joe served in the United States Army, 240th Construction Engineers I Corp in South Pacific and Japan.
    On 7 Nov 1947, Joe was honorably discharged from the United States Military. On the same date he re-enlisted into the Army Tank Corps and served in Europe for 4 years. He was also with the 18th Infantry Regt 1st Inf. Div. as a boxer. He had 110 fights, losing only 10.
    On 16 Mar 1954, Joe re-enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served 17 years with the Tac Fighter Units in the Philippines, in England and several bases in the United States. His final tour of duty was in Vietnam 1968-1969 with the 31st Tac F.T.R. WG. Unit. He received 2 battle stars. The New York and New Mexico Air guard units were called up and served with the 31st at Tuy Hoa, Vietnam.
    On 1 Jan 1971, Joe retired as a Major Sgt.
    After Joe retired from the military, he worked at the Centralia Post Office, Wesner's Pest Control in Centralia and World Color Press in Salem. He had his own business, "Sunburst" a landscape and pest control for about 10 years.
    Wanda was a cosmetologist and had her own hair dressing salon for several years.
    Because of Joe's Air Force career, the family was able to travel and live in different states and countries. They lived in Denver, Colorado; Clovis, New Mexico; Henderson, Nevada; Waco, Texas; and Lakenheath, England for 3 years and 4 months; and back to the state, Phoenix, Arizona.
    In 1968, they moved back to Salem, Illinois.
    In 2008, Wanda and Joe live in Salem, Marion County, Illinois.

After everyone arrived, a short memorial service was held to honor all deceased family member of Elder and Mrs. W. E. WRIGHT. Attending from Illinois were Dale and Sharon WRIGHT of Alma, David and Rhonda (WRIGHT) POESCHEL and sons Jake and Jordan of Petersburg, Sue WRIGHT of Springfield, Chris and Trina GRIM and sons Evan and Nicholas of Auburn, Anna WRIGHT of Rockford, Dennis and Marcia (WRIGHT) ADAMS and daughters Carolina, Veronica, Christina and Andrea of Winnabago, Sava and JoAnn BASIC and sons Sava and Mihajlo of Naperville. Attending from Twin Lakes, WI were Bozidar (Bob) and Ruth (WRIGHT) SOKOLOVIC. The gathering was especially happy to see Mihajlo, grandson of Ruth SOKOLOVIC. He was on leave from Fort Bragg N.C. where he will complete several months of intensive training with the U.S. Army Special Forces as an army medic. Lynn and Marilee went to great effort to assemble and display many family pictures. They have a special military display honoring Lynn's father, Paul and Marilee's father Dale TURVEY who served their country during WWII. The collection gives reverence and added meaning to the fifth commandment to "Honor thy father and they mother." Needless to say we missed all who could not attend as we departed this most gracious home and hospitality assured that once again family ties have been strengthened. R.S."

    Marshal married 1st Nellie Clara NICHOLS 1926. She was born 23 Sep 1904, daughter of Jonathan Robert "Jon" and Mary Elizabeth "Betty" (MORGAN) NICHOLS. (Jonathan was the son of Jasper B. and Sarah J. (GREEN) NICHOLS.) Nellie died 19 Oct 1971. Burial in Alma Cemetery.
    Marshall married 2nd Catherine MAULDING 1980. She was born 14 May 1904, Marion County, Illinois, daughter of Charles and Emma (GREY) MAULDING. She died Sunday, 11 May 1997, Aviston, Illinois. She had three daughters by a previous marriage.
    On 5 Aug 1926, the Kinmundy Express has, "Swift School: Billie MORRIS, Jr. and wife attended a kitchen shower for Mr. and Mrs. Marshall WILLIAMS at Zion Saturday night."

    On 15 Apr 1930, the census shows Marshall (26) and Lillie (25) WILLIAMS living in Kinmundy Township, Marion County, Illinois. They and their parents were said to have been born in Illinois. Marshall was a farmer. He was not a veteran. They were renting their home. He was said to have been age 22 and she 21 when they married. With them was their daughter, Leah W. WILLIAMS age 2 years and 3 months, born IL.
    On 24 Apr 1930, the Kinmndy Express has, "Swift School: Marshall WILLIAMS and wife are the parents of a baby girl born April 21."
    Marshall worked for the State of Illinois. He was a 32nd Mason, Shriner and Scottish Rites.
    He made his home in Alma, where they reared his four children.

VALLOW surprised their many friends by slipping away to Morganfield, Ky last Saturday where they were married by Rev. Gilbert P. ROBERTSON of that city. They were unattended. The bride is the eldest daughter of Deputy Sheriff and Mrs. Marshall WILLIAMS, and is a graduate of Kinmundy H.S. with the class of ‘46. Since her graduation she has taught school. The groom is the youngest son of Editor and Mrs. J. N. VALLOW of Kinmundy. He is a graduate of Kinmundy H.S. with the class of ‘46, and also a graduate of the Centralia Junior College with the class of ‘48. At the present time, he is employed by the State of Illinois, Division of Highways but will enter the Univ. of Illinois in the fall. They expect to take a short honeymoon just before the opening of school this fall. For the present, this happy couple will make their home with their parents."
    On 3 Dec 2009, The Farina News has, "LEAH VALLOW, 82, DIES - Leah W. VALLOW, 82, of 80 Edgewood Circle, Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, passed away on Friday, November 13, 2009, in the Chambersburg Hospital following a lengthy illness. Born on September 19, 1927, in Patoka, Illinois, she was a daughter of the late Marshall and Nellie (NICHOLS) WILLIAMS. Early in her life, she taught for three years at one room schools (Lacey School in the Farina area for two years in the late 1940's and Greenridge School in the Alma area for one year). Following her marriage to Carl V. VALLOW on June 12, 1948, she was a full time devoted homemaker. She was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church in Fayetteville, Pennsylvania, and the Order of Eastern Star; and was active for many years with the Chambersburg Hospital Auxiliary. She was the daughter-in-law of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. N. VALLOW, Publisher of the Kinmundy Express. A loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she is survived by her loving husband, Carl of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania; four sons, Bernard J. VALLOW and wife, Connie, of Jacksonville, Florida, Les W. VALLOW and wife, Diane, of Valparaiso, Indiana, John W. VALLOW of Cleveland, Tennessee, and Alan Norris VALLOW of Lodi, California; a daughter, Alice V. GUDGEON and husband, Grant, of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Gloria WELKER of Salem and Sue SWIFT of Alma; and a brother, James L. WILLIAMS of Kinmundy. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Monday, November 16, in the Chapel fo Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home in Chambeersburg, Pennsylvania, with Pastor Thomas Willis officiating. Interment was in Parklawns Memorial Gardens.     On 14 Apr 1952, The Kinmundy Express (Kinmundy, Marion County, Illinois) has, "On Sunday, Feb. 10, in the Methodist Church in Alma, occurred the marriage of Miss Gloria WILLIAMS of Alma, to Dale CHASTEEN of Salem. Mrs. Floyd WILLIAMS, aunt of the bride, played music, and Miss Martha TREDWAY sang several songs. Rev. Frank TREDWAY performed the ceremony. Miss Valeska REDMAN of Salem, girlhood friend of the bride was the bridesmaid, and James WILLIAMS, brother of the bride, was the best man. Robert GAMMON, cousin of the bride, and Alfred RISI, brother-in-law of the bridegroom, were ushers. A reception was held in the basement of the church and Miss Sue WILLIAMS and Miss Joyce McHATTON served the cake and punch. The bride is the second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marshall WILLIAMS of Alma, and the bridegroom is the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. S. M. CHASTEEN of Salem. Both are graduates of Salem H.S. After a weeks honeymoon in the southern states, the couple will live in Salem where the bridegroom is employed by the Dennis Rushing Derrick Constructor Co., and the bride is an employee of Bell Telephone Co."
    On 11 Jul 1957, The Kinmundy Express (Kinmundy, Marion County, Illinois) has, "Dale CHASTEEN of Alma is a patient in the Fayette County Hospital in Vandalia with a fractured skull, the result of being thrown from his horse Sunday afternoon. The horse is considered gentle, but for some reason began bucking. In falling, Dale’s forehead struck the ground. It will be necessary for him to remain in the hospital the reminder of this week."
    On 1 Aug 1957, The Kinmundy Express (Kinmundy, Marion County, Illinois) has, "Dale CHASTEEN: Dale CHASTEEN, 24, died in St. Luke’s Hospital in St. Louis Friday. Services were held Monday from the Bowman Funeral Home in Salem, with interment in Salem Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Gloria (WILLIAMS); his 22 month old son, Jerry; his parents, Mr and Mrs. S. M. CHASTEEN, Salem; 2 sisters, Mrs. Alfred RISI, Los Angeles, Calif.; and Mrs. B. G. PARTON, Midway Island; 1 half-sister, Mrs. Dale HUNT, Mt. Vernon; and 2 half-brothers, Harold TACKETT of Salem; and George TACKET, Centralia. Dale was thrown from a horse on July 7th and received a fractured skull. He remained in the Fayette County Hospital 2 weeks, and came home. On Wednesday of last week, he was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital in St. Louis, where he died Friday."
    Gloria was a telephone operator and later she worked for the Salem Post Office.

WILLIAMS, son of Mr. and Mrs. Marshall WILLIAMS of Alma, were married Wednesday in the parsonage of the Alma Methodist Church by Rev. Frank TREDWAY. Attendants were Mrs. G. Dale CHASTEEN, Salem, the former Gloria WILLIAMS, sister of the groom, and Mr. CHASTEEN. Mrs. WILLIAMS is a graduate of Kinmundy H.S. with the class of 1951, and is employed in the Williams Grocery Store here in Kinmundy. The groom graduated from Salem H.S. in 1951 and is employed as a welder at the McNamar Crawley Tank Co. in Salem. The couple will resided in the Dunlap apartments."

Sue HESTER HULSEY was named Vice President and Donna Mae GARRETT, the secretary-treasurer. 144 members and guests were in attendance at the gathering. Mrs. Pearl FISHER was the oldest member graduating with the class of ‘98. Also Earl HENSLEY of Chicago, who graduated in ‘01, was present, and this was his first alumni reception. Katherine WORMLEY, President, presided over the meeting, and Vice President this year was Lura ROBNETT, and Mildred KLEISS was Sec.-Treas. Herbert WILLIAMS gave the response from the Class of ‘53. In addition to his parents, Mr. WILLIAMS is survived by a daughter, Sara WILLIAMS of Walters, Okla.; a sister, Kathy GREENE and husband Roland of Perrysburg, Ohio; and two nephews, Michael GREENE of Perrysburg, Ohio, and Alex GREENE of Elyria, Ohio. Mr. WILLIAMS was a counselor in Health Care Services and attended Kinmundy Christian Church. A private family graveside service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Kimundy.     Sue married Ronald Eugene SWIFT. He was born 6 Oct 1937, son of Russell and Iris (JACKSON) SWIFT. Russell was the son of Cyrus Moses and Elizabeth "Lizzie" (GREEN) SWIFT. (Cyrus was the son of James M. and Elizabeth (GARRETT) SWIFT.) (See Swift Family, files section of Sandy Branch Yahoo Group ) Ron died Wednesday, 10 May 2006, at his home, Alma, Marion County, Illinois. He was 68 years of age. Burial at the Alma Cemetery.
    Ron was an auctioneer. He ran and owned Swift's Auction Service for over 30 years. He was an excellent auctioneer.
    Ron served as Mayor of Alma for 25 years.
    They are members of the Alma Christian Church.
    Ron was a member of the Kinmundy Masonic Lodge.

    Rhonda was elected Marion County Circuit Clerk in 2001. She was the first woman to hold the position. She had worked for the Circuit Clerk's office for 23 years before being elected. (See news clipping below.)
    Ronda is a member of the Kinmundy Christian Church and of the Kinmundy Chapter of the Easter Star.

    They were members of the Alma United Methodist Church.
    Ava was a member of the Eastern Star. She was a schoolteacher.
