Martha A. "Mattie" McWhirter Graves

of
Alma, Marion County, Illinois



            

Martha A. "Mattie" McWHIRTER, born 2 April 1865, Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois, daughter of Charles Pitts and Rebecca (Hammer) McWhirter (See Chapter 7). She died 29 Mar 1938, Marion County, Illinois. Buried at Martin Cemetery.
    Mattie married 1st Isaac Benjamin F. GRAVES 20 Jun 1880, Marion County, Illinois by Peter M Green, M. G. He was born 15 Ju1 1862, son of Isaac and Sarah E. (MALONE) GRAVES. Sarah (MALONE) GRAVES was the daughter of John and Eveline MALONE. Isaac died 1 Mar 1898. Buried at Martin Cemetery.
    Mattie married 2nd Isaac A. A. SPROUSE (as his 3rd wife) 27 Feb 1900. She was 34 and he was 51 when they married. He was born Apr 1848, Walnut Hill, Marion County, Illinois. Isaac died Mar 1914.
    Isaac GRAVES served in the Civil War, Co., E, 62nd IL Inf.
    On 23 Feb 1900, the Kinmundy Express has, "I. A. SPOUSE, postmaster of Alma, and Miss Mattie GRAVES will be married next Thursday."
    On 1 Mar 1900, the Salem Republican has, "I.A. SPROUSE (postmasater of Alma) and Mrs. Mattie GRAVES, who lived north of that village, were married on Feb 27th."
    On 5 Jun 1900, the census shows Isaac A. (52) and Mattie (36) SPROUSE living in Alma, Marion County, Illinois. With them were his children Robert age 16; Cora A. age 15; Earl age 13;and Stella age 9. Also with them were her childre Noble age 18; Noah C. age 15; Norman age 13; Nova A. age 7; and Nona age 6. Also with them were nephews Erasmus WRIGHT age 29 and Sammy WRIGHT age 21. Mattie had given birth to 5 children, with all still living at time of census. Isaac was the Post Master. Noble and Noah were farming.
    On 16 Apr 1910, the census shows Mattie SPROUSE age 45, living in Alma, Marion County, Illinois. With her were her children Norman GRAVES age 23; Nova GRAVES age 18; and Nona GRAVES age 15. Also living with her was a border James LEWIS age 23. Also living with her was her son-in-law Edward FOX age 25. (Note: Nona had already married Edward, but her name was listed as Graves in the census.) Mattie was listed as a dressmaker. Edward was a brakeman on the railroad. James was also a railroader. Mattie had given birth to 6 children with only 4 living at time of census. They lived on Railroad Street in Alma.
    On 25 Jul 1912, the Kinmundy Express has, "Tuesday evening Mrs. I. A. SPROUSE, of Alma, in company with 2 other parties, started to drive out west of Alma, and when the vehicle started to go down the Bob Malone hill, the horse they were driving took fright and started to run. Mrs. SPROUSE jumped from the buggy and in doing so dislocated one arm and broke one limb above the ankle. The other two occupants remained in the buggy and were unhurt."
    On 19 Jan 1920, the census shows Martha SPROUSE age 52, living in Alma, Marion County, Illinois. With her was her grandson Cecil GRAVES age 18. Cecil was a farm laborer.
    On 11 Apr 1930, the census shows Mattie SPROUSE age 65, living in Alma, Marion County, Illinois. Living with her were two roomers Stanford LASATER age 67; and Alvin SUTHERS age 58. All there listed as widowed. Mattie's home was valued at $2,500.00.

2. Noah C. GRAVES, born 9 Oct 1884, Illinois. He died Aug 1962.

3. Norman F. GRAVES, born Dee 1887, Illinois.
    Norman married Clara SOUTHERS.

4. Nova A. GRAVES, born Dee 1892, Illinois.
    Nova married Edward "Ed" FOX 7 Apr 1909, Marion County, Illinois. She was 17 and he was 23 when they married. He was born 1884/85.
    On 16 Apr 1910, the census shows Edward FOX and Nova GRAVES living in Alma, Marion County, Illinois with Nova's mother, Mattie SPROUSE.
    On 13 Feb 1920, the census shows Edd (34) and Nova (28) FOX living in Tonti Township, Marion County, Illinois. With them was John BLURTON age 62. John was listed as a servant. Ed was a brakeman for the railroad.
    On 11 Apr 1930, the census shows Ed (44) and Nova (38) FOX living in Chapaign, Illinois. Their house was valued at $4,000.00. Ed was a brakeman for the steam railroad. No children were listed.

5. Nona GRAVES, born May 1894, Illinois.
    Nona married John T. GUTHRIE 4 Mar 1912, Marion County, Illinois. She was 17 and he was 21 when they married.

Noble Graves, born 12 May 1882, Illinois, son of Isaac Benjamin F. and Mattie A. (McWHIRTER) GRAVES. He died 19 Dec 1907. He is buried in Martin Cemetery.
    Noble married Nettie BASS 28 Nov 1900, Marion County, Illinois. He was 19 and she was 16 when they married. She was born in 1884. He is buried in Martin Cemetery.
    Nettie married 2nd to Richard McWHIRTER 31 Mar 1911, Marion County, Illinois. She was 26 and he was 33 when they married. (See #6 following) She had three children with Richard.
    On 6 Apr 1911, the Kinmundy Express has, "McWHERTER-GRAVES: On the evening of Friday, March 31, 1911, at the home of W.H. BASS and wife in this city, occurred the marriage of his daughter, Mrs. Nettie GRAVES, of Alma, and Mr. Richard McWHERTER of Fayette Co., Rev. J.W. RITCHEY, pastor of the Presbyterian Church performing the ceremony. They will make their home in Fayette county where the groom is in business."

    On 19 Jan 1920, the census shows Cecil GRAVES age 18, living with his grandmother, Mattie SPROUSE in Alma, Marion County, Illinois.
    On 14 Apr 1930, the census shows Cecil A. (28) and Alice (28) GRAVES living in Champaign, Illinois. They owned their home. It was valued at $4,000.00. They owned a radio. Cecil was a driver for a Dry Cleaning business.
    Cecil was living with his Grandmother Mattie in 1920.

Noah Cleveland GRAVES, born 9 Oct 1884, Illinois, son of Isaac Benjamin F. and Mattie A. (McWHIRTER) GRAVES. He died Aug 1962.

Noah married Edna B. HARVEY 28 Feb 1904, Marion County, Illinois. He was 19 and she was 20 when they married. Edna was born 1883, Illinois.
    On 23 Apr 1910, the census shows Noah (25) and Edna (26) GRAVES living in Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois. With them were their chldren Fridah age 5; and Georgia age 4. Noah was a farmer.
    On 19 Jan 1920, the census shows Noah C. (35) and Edna B. (36) GRAVES living in Alma, Marion County, Illinois. With them were their children Freeda age 15; and Georgia age 14. Noah was a brakeman for the railroad.
    On 16 Apr 1930, the census shows Noah (45) and Edna B. (46) GRAVES living at Homan Avenue, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. With them was their daughter Georgia STEVENS age 24 and her husband Paul B. STEVENS age 25. They were all renting. Georgia had been married for less than a year. Noah was a machinist at a screw factory. Paul was a architectural designer. Paul was born in North Dakota.
    On 12 Dec 1946, the Kinmundy Express has, "Mrs. Edna GRAVES, 63, of Champaign, died Monday at Burnham City Hospital. Death followed a year’s illness with heart disease. Services were held from the Mittendorf Funeral Home. She was born Aug. 20, 1883 at Alma, daughter of Charles and Bertha HARVEY, and married to Noah GRAVES on Feb. 10, 1904. She leaves her husband and 2 children, Mrs. Paul STEVENS of Chicago, and Mrs. O. E. THOMPSON of Bellingham, Wash.; one grandson, Paul STEVENS of Chicago, and 1 sister, Mrs. Mabel GROTTS of Olympia, Wash. Burial was in East Lawn Cemetery in Urbana."

Norman F. GRAVES, born Dee 1887, Illinois, son of Isaac Benjamin F. and Mattie A. (McWHIRTER) GRAVES.

Norman married Clara SOUTHERS, 16 Jan 1914, Marion County, Illinois. He was 26 and she was 18 when they married.
    On 19 Jan 1920, the census shows Norman (32) and Clara (24) GRAVES living in Alma, Marion County, Illinois. With them are their children Norma age 5; Martha age 4 years and 3 months; and Benjamin age 2 years and 9 months. Norman was a house carpenter.
    On 11 Apr 1930, the census shows N. F. (43) and Clara (34) GRAVES living at 1101 North Hickery, Champaign, Illinois. With them were their children Norma L. age 15; Martha N. age 14; Benjamin A. age 13; Pearl L. age 8; Mary P. age 6; and Betty J. age 3.

    Pearl married Harold J. EAGAN 25 Nov 1944, Alma, Marion County, Illinois.
    On 7 Dec 1944, the Kinmundy Express has, "Harold J. EAGAN and Miss Pearl GRAVES, both of Champaign, were married in the home of and by the Elder W. E. WRIGHT, in Alma on Nov. 25. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norman GRAVES, former residents of Alma, but for the past 15 years have made their home in Champaign. She is a graduate of the Champaign High School and at the time of her marriage, was doing factory work. The groom is son of Mr. and Mrs. Harrison EAGAN, residing just north of the C. & E. I. Lake. For the past several months, he has been employed in an ice cream factory in Champaign. They will make their home in Champaign."
