Chapter 4
James S. McWhirter
of
Marion County, Illinois

James S. McWHIRTER, born in 1825, Wilson County, Tennessee, son of Charles and Nancy (GRIFFIN) McWHIRTER. He died 18 Dec 1897, Alma Township, Marion County, Illinois.
James married first Martha CLUCK in Tennessee. She was born 1823/24, Tennessee. She died before July of 1866.
James married Second Mrs. Sarah Charity ( _______ ) WINKLER 16 July 1866, Marion County, Illinois. She was born 1833/34, Indiana.
Between 1844 and 1848, James moved to Marion County, Illinois between with his brother, Samuel H. McWHIRTER.
After 1850 and before 1852-53, James and his brother moved back to Tennessee.
Before 1854/55, James and his brother moved back to Marion County, Illinois.
In 1860, the census shows James McWHIRTER living in Foster Township with an Alma Post Office.
In 1870, the census shows James McWHIRTER living in Foster Township, but now had a Lester Post Office. (Lester was a little spot in the road and no longer exists today. It had Arnold Chapel a Methodist-Episcopal Church-South, a school and a general store. The church burned down. The school was eventually torn down. The store, which was two-story, fell in on itself after years of no use. Lester stood on the crossroads of Vermundy and Jones Roads.)
In 1872, James bought land in Section 18 of Stevenson Township, which was near the city of Salem to the east and a distance from Foster Township. Their neighbors were James WINKLER and family. James was the son of James' second wife, Charity.

(Note: They were living next to James WINKLER and family. The main reason I mention this is because the search for James McWHIRTER doesn't come up on ancestry.com, but James WINKLER does.)
On 13 Nov 1884, James purchased 40 acres on the NE of Section 10 of Tonti Township. This was pretty close to where his nephew, Charles Pitts McWHIRTER lived.

The news article about him:
June 27. 1907: ... Found Unconscious: Last Saturday morning about 4:30, Geo. McWHIRTER, a 17-year-old lad of Alma, was found lying on the railroad tracks near the depot in that village. He was taken to the office of Dr. S. L. LASWELL where he was given surgical attention by Drs. LASWELL, Noah DEAN, and Hugo MILLER. The skull was fractured in the back of the head and a part of the skull removed. The left eye was torn out and he was otherwise bruised. It is supposed the accident occurred while attempting to get off a moving train, but just how it happened is not known and probably never will be as he was alone at the time alone. He was in Kinmundy the night before about 10 o'clock and it is thought he caught a freight train to ride home. He was unconscious when found and has been in that condition up to this time."
